Welcome to our Member Spotlight Series, where we proudly showcase the unique businesses making a difference in our Strive Community and beyond. In today’s spotlight, we have the pleasure of speaking with Abel Gomez, founder and owner of Gotcha Covered-Carrollton, a business specializing in custom window treatments and accessories. Join us as we learn more about the work Abel does for his customers and what he enjoys most about his job!
Tell us a little about Gotcha Covered of Carrollton.
Gotcha Covered is a franchise. We specialize on window treatments such as custom blinds, roller shades, honeycomb shades, solar screens, and beautiful drapery.
What led you to start Gotcha Covered of Carrollton?
My cousin in Houston, who also owns a Gotcha Covered franchise there, introduced me to the company. In 2021, when I finished my Master’s degree in Emergency Management and Disaster Science, I was ready to start a career with FEMA, a government entity or any city in the USA, to help victims of disasters; however, I was also introduced to Gotcha Covered and the opportunity to start my own business. The decision was not easy, but I believe I selected the right choice, and now I have to work hard on it to grow my business and help every homeowner on their journey to a more energy-efficient home and a more beautiful home.
What sets your business apart from your competitors?
I pride myself on excellence in customer service. Someone may offer the best price and best product in the industry, but if the customer has to choose between a generic, expensive product vs. excellent customer service, the customer will always choose customer service. Anytime an issue arises from either product defects or warranty issues, I’m there to take care of my customer and provide a quick solution. My business is mainly based on customer referrals and Google searches. I offer my customers a good-quality product, budget-friendly options, and Abel’s world-famous excellent customer service.
What is something you wish you’d known when you were just starting your business?
If I had to go back in time and start a business with the experience I have now, almost four years later, I would have started my business without the franchise. However, thanks to my franchisor support, I have been able to move forward and establish a growing business with unlimited potential. I knew from day one that every homeowner and business owner must have window treatments, but offering the best custom product is based on knowledge and experience. Only time and learning from every single sale and installation have allowed and will continue to allow me to be the best I can be.
How do you navigate your work-life balance?
I’m a sole corporate owner and employee so far. I provide complementary consultations for all my customers and always do my own installations. With that being said, I have a busy schedule and work long hours. My family is a priority for me and having a heavy work schedule hasn’t interfered with a quality family life style so far. I do need to start thinking about adding another employee who wants to train and perform like me. That is the next step in my career.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Most people I do consultations for do not know many other options beyond blinds. Blinds are just the beginning of the exciting world of custom window treatments. Once I consult and introduce my customers to other options, I help them design their own window treatments and explore other possibilities. The end result is an upgraded house look, more energy-efficient options, and a wonderful new look for their windows. The best part of my job is the satisfaction of having another happy customer after every finalized transaction.
How has being a part of the Preston Grove community affected you and your business?
I have used the building to meet customers and factory reps and have had great meetings in the building’s conference rooms. The best part of this is the fact that I have a place of business on my Google Business page; I receive several leads a month just by having a presence online.
If you had a friend in town and you could take them to one of your favorite restaurants or spots in your community, where would you take them?
I love Mexican food and Salvadorean food. Glorias is an excellent choice for both cuisines in one visit. There are several Glorias restaurants in the DFW Metroplex
